Fernando I struck this issue during one of the most turbulent stretches of his reign — the First Fernandine War with Castile, fought precisely over his claim to the Castilian throne following the death of Pedro I in 1369. The Tuy mint, operating under Portuguese control on the Galician frontier, was a strategic choice: proximity to the contested border kept coin supply close to military need.
Tuy itself would not remain in Portuguese hands long.
