Panama's balboa has been pegged to the U.S. dollar at par since 1904, making it one of the Western Hemisphere's longest-running fixed exchange arrangements. The country issues no paper currency of its own — U.S. Federal Reserve notes fill that role entirely — so Panamanian coins carry an outsized practical burden as the only domestically issued circulating medium.
