| Reverse description | The ruined stone facade of the Convento de San Francisco de Asis, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Panama Viejo, is depicted in high relief at the centre of the field. The irregular rubble masonry walls, a partially preserved arched doorway, and the remains of flanking structures are rendered in fine detail, evoking the colonial-era ruins. The curved legend CONVENTO DE SAN FRANCISCO arcs along the upper periphery, with PANAMA VIEJO inscribed below it in a secondary arc. The year of issue 2018 appears in the lower exergue. |

| Additional information |
Panama's half balboa coinage has used the same planchet specifications as the U.S. Kennedy half dollar since the 1930s, a direct consequence of the monetary agreement tying the balboa to the dollar at par — Panamanian coins are struck by the U.S. Mint and are legal tender interchangeably with their American equivalents.
The Convent of San Francisco de Asís in Panama City's Casco Viejo district dates to the early 17th century, surviving the 1671 sacking of the original Panama settlement by Henry Morgan and subsequent reconstruction on the current peninsula site.
