Obverse description Central papal coat of arms displayed on a narrow semi-oval shield, decorated with a flowering plant and flanked by four six-pointed stars in the field. The shield is surmounted by the crossed keys of Saint Peter bound with a cord and bows, above which rests the papal tiara. Ornate foliate scrollwork frames the shield on either side, and tasselled cords hang from the lower flanks. The circular Latin legend runs along the border, reading PIVS SEXT to the left and P . M . A. XXIII to the right, separated by the design elements. The entire composition is contained within a boldly reeded border.
