Obverse description The quartered papal arms of Gregory XVI occupy the central field, surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys, the traditional symbols of pontifical authority. Two tasselled cardinal's hats flank the shield on either side. The coin's arms are divided into four quarters: the upper left displaying an eagle with a chalice, the upper right a mountain over three stars, and the lower quarters plain. A Latin legend curves around the border reading GREGORIVS XVI PONT MAX A followed by the regnal year numeral.

Reverse description A six-pointed star is positioned at the apex of the design within the upper field. Below the star, the three-line denomination inscription MEZZO BAIOCCO ROMANO is displayed in bold raised lettering across the central field, with the date 1834 beneath. The entire central design is enclosed within a finely rendered laurel wreath, tied at the base, with individual leaf sprays clearly articulated. A beaded border encircles the entire reverse.

Additional information

Gregory XVI came to the papal throne in February 1831 under immediate pressure — a liberal insurrection had broken out across the Legations before he was even consecrated, and Austrian troops had to be called in to restore order. His early coinage, including this issue, was struck against that backdrop of political fragility and heavy dependence on foreign military support.

KM#1313 corresponds to the Bologna mint's output for this type.
