Benedict XIII declared the 1725 Jubilee year — the Holy Year held every quarter-century — and the Papal Mint at Gubbio struck this copper piece as part of the broader jubilee coinage program. Benedict, a Dominican friar who had twice refused the papacy before finally accepting in 1724, was notably indifferent to temporal governance and left most administrative authority to his corrupt favorite, Cardinal Niccolò Coscia. The Gubbio mint operated as a minor provincial facility, and its jubilee output was modest compared to Rome.
Coscia was later tried and convicted of financial misconduct under Benedict's successor.
