Obverse description The Archangel Michael, depicted in full armour with large spreading wings, stands triumphant over and spearing a dragon prostrate at his feet. The archangel is shown facing, wearing a plumed helmet and holding a long spear or lance with which he pierces the dragon below. The design is rendered in the bold, deeply struck style characteristic of late Henrician hammered gold coinage. A beaded inner circle frames the central device, with the royal legend in Gothic uncial lettering running continuously around the outer circumference.
