Reverse description The reverse presents a standing allegorical figure of the Maid of Holland (Nederland Maagd), draped in classical robes, facing left. In her right hand she holds aloft a tall staff surmounted by a liberty cap (pileus), symbolising freedom, while her left arm rests upon a Bible or law book placed on an ornate Corinthian-style pedestal, representing the foundation of Dutch law and faith. The circumferential Latin legend HAC NITIMVR HANC TVEMVR — meaning 'On her we lean, her we protect' — arcs around the upper field. The date 1698 appears in the lower exergue beneath the figure's feet.
