Additional information

Ernest Augustus held the Bishopric of Osnabrück under the terms of the Peace of Westphalia (1648), which imposed an unusual alternating succession between Catholic and Protestant bishops — he was the first Protestant holder under that arrangement, serving as the Lutheran incumbent while simultaneously pursuing his ambitions in Hanover. The bishopric functioned more as a political and financial asset than a spiritual office for him.

Kennepohl 275 is the standard attribution for this fractional issue, produced during a four-year window before Ernest Augustus's attentions turned increasingly toward consolidating the Duchy of Calenberg.
