| Obverse description | Bare-headed right-facing effigy of King Carlos I of Portugal occupies the central field, rendered in low relief with fine detail on the curly hair. The engraver's initials 'V.A.' appear below the truncation. The circular legend 'CARLOS I REI DE PORTUGAL' runs along the upper periphery within a beaded border, while the Roman numeral date 'MCMI' (1901) is inscribed along the lower rim. The portrait is executed in a restrained neoclassical style characteristic of late 19th-century Portuguese colonial coinage. |
