Additional information

Dombes was an anomaly — a sovereign principality embedded within eastern France, issuing its own coinage under feudal privilege long after such arrangements had become politically inconvenient for Paris. Anna Marie Louise d'Orléans, the Grande Mademoiselle, inherited Dombes from her father in 1627 and held it through decades of turbulent relations with the crown, including her involvement in the Fronde. This 1⁄12 écu is among the final issues she struck before ceding Dombes to the Duc du Maine in 1681.

The "4th type" designation reflects successive die revisions across her long reign — Divo catalogues at least five distinct type groupings for her silver fractions.
