| Obverse description | Central field features the royal cipher of King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev, rendered in traditional Nepalese mandala-style design within a square cartouche with ornamental projections at each cardinal point. The king's name and titles are inscribed in Devanagari script within the cartouche panels. The Bikram Sambat regnal year 2058 appears at the base of the design, flanked by decorative floral and symbolic motifs characteristic of Nepalese royal coinage. |

Gyanendra's first reign lasted just nine days in 2001, installed by the royal council immediately after the palace massacre of June 1 that killed King Birendra, Queen Aishwarya, and seven other members of the royal family. He was then briefly succeeded by Crown Prince Dipendra — who had carried out the shootings — before Dipendra died of his own gunshot wound three days later, making Gyanendra king a second time. Coins issued under his name from this year therefore carry the weight of Nepal's most violent modern dynastic rupture.
