Obverse description The obverse features a large, detailed rendering of the King Protea (Protea cynaroides), South Africa's national flower, depicted in high relief at the center of the field. The bloom's prominent dome-shaped receptacle and radiating petals are rendered with fine engraving detail. The legend SOUTH AFRICA arcs along the upper periphery, while the date 2000 appears in the lower exergue. The engraver's initials ALS (Arthur Sutherland) are incused below the flower at the base.
