The ECU was a basket currency unit used by the European Community from 1979 until it was replaced by the euro in 1999 — Spain joined the system upon its EC accession in 1986. This 2024 steel issue bearing "1½ ECU" denominations has no legal tender basis in any monetary system and appears to be a fantasy or novelty piece, as Spain never issued ECU-denominated coinage during the currency's actual existence, and the fractional 1½ ECU value corresponds to no historically issued denomination.
