Banco da China's entry into Macau's banknote circulation came as part of the territory's unique dual-bank system, in which both BdC and Banco Nacional Ultramarino held concurrent rights of issue — an arrangement that persisted through the 1999 handover to China and was retained under the Basic Law. This note, issued in the final year of Portuguese administration, was printed in Beijing, making it a political statement as much as a financial instrument. Banco da China had only begun issuing Macau patacas in 1995, relatively late given its obvious institutional interests in the territory.
