Nigeria's polymer 1,000 Naira was introduced as part of a controversial 2022 redesign ordered by President Buhari's government, ostensibly to combat counterfeiting and mop up illicitly held cash ahead of the 2023 elections. The rollout was catastrophic — the CBN imposed aggressive deadlines for retiring the old cotton-paper notes, triggering a severe cash shortage that persisted into early 2023 and sparked nationwide protests.
