| Obverse description | The obverse is printed in shades of blue and grey, centred on a large vignette of a phoenix rising from flames, its wings spread wide against a guilloche underprint. The denominations "1000" appear in bold numerals to the left and right of the central vignette, flanked by decorative foliate sprays of olive and oak branches at each corner. The Caisse Centrale de la France Libre was established by de Gaulle's Free French authority in 1941 specifically to give the movement a functioning financial instrument — part of the broader effort to assert administrative legitimacy over French colonial territories that had come over to the Allied side. Bradbury Wilkinson printed the series from their New Malden works, as they did for dozens of colonial and exile currency programs during the war years.
Pick 38 circulated primarily in Equatorial Africa and the Levant, territories where the Free French held or contested control. The issuer itself was replaced by the Caisse Centrale de la France d'Outre-Mer in 1944, which rendered these notes obsolete relatively quickly after a short active life.
