In August 1923, German inflation was accelerating so rapidly that municipal governments across the country were authorized to issue their own emergency currency — Notgeld — simply to keep local commerce functioning. These four small Black Forest towns in the Kinzig valley pooled their issue authority, an unusual joint arrangement that reflected both administrative practicality and the speed at which central bank supply had collapsed.
The million-mark denomination, unthinkable two years earlier, was already being overtaken by events within weeks of printing.
