Comments

Neuwied's district committee issued this million-mark note at the absolute peak of the German hyperinflation crisis — by August 1923, a million marks was barely enough for a loaf of bread, and municipal and district authorities across the Rhine Province were printing emergency Notgeld simply to make change possible. The Ströder print shop in Neuwied handled the run locally, which was common for smaller administrative districts that couldn't wait on central supply chains.

District-level Notgeld from this period was frequently demonetized within weeks of issue as the denomination became worthless faster than the ink dried.
