Comments

Frankenthal's municipal treasury issued this million-mark note during the hyperinflationary spiral that made such denominations briefly routine. Stadtkasse issues — printed by local authorities rather than the Reichsbank — were emergency Notgeld in the truest sense: stopgap instruments produced because the central bank simply could not supply enough physical currency to meet daily demand as prices doubled by the week.

Municipal issues from the Palatinate are worth distinguishing from the decorative "collector Notgeld" deliberately printed for the philatelic market in the same period. Frankenthal's issue was functional, not ornamental.
