Piri Reis completed his world map — the one that famously depicted Antarctica's coastline before its official European discovery — in 1513, drawing on source charts he claimed derived from Columbus's own surveys. The 1997 gold issue commemorates the map's existence rather than the cartographer's life, timed loosely around the broader Turkish cultural rehabilitation of Ottoman-era scientific figures that gained momentum in the 1990s. The tiny format reflects the Turkish lira's catastrophic devaluation by that point: a one-million-lira denomination was, in purchasing terms, essentially fractional.
