Turkey's 1990s high-denomination coinage reflects a lira in freefall — by 1996, inflation had been running above 70% annually for years, which is precisely why a conservation-themed collector piece needed seven digits to price itself into respectability. The Mediterranean monk seal, Monachus monachus, was by this point one of the most critically endangered marine mammals on earth, with the global population estimated below 500 individuals, a significant portion of them clinging to Turkey's Aegean coastline around the Foça Special Environmental Protection Area.
The issue was part of a broader WWF-affiliated series. Struck to proof standards at the Istanbul mint.
