Additional information

Issued by the Banque Nationale de la RDP Lao in 2006, this is a purely numismatic piece with no plausible circulation history — at a face value of one million kip, it would have represented roughly a hundred US dollars at contemporary exchange rates, while the gold content alone placed its intrinsic value orders of magnitude higher. Laos has issued oversized gold pieces intermittently since the 1990s, almost exclusively for the export collector market via state trading companies.

The 155.52g specification is a standard five-troy-ounce format, widely used by sovereign mints for high-denomination proof issues in this period.
