Reverse description The reverse presents a central depiction of the Etchmiadzin Cathedral rendered in fine relief against a radiant sunburst background emanating from behind the church. Surrounding the central motif are eight circular medallions, each containing a portrait bust of a Catholicos of All Armenians who served during the 20th century, arranged symmetrically around the full periphery of the field. The Armenian legend XX ԴԱՐԻ arcs along the lower left and the legend ՀԱՅՈՑ ԿԱԹՈՂԻԿՈՍՆԵՐ continues to the lower right, together reading '20th Century Catholicos of the Armenians.' The overall design is enclosed within a finely milled border.

Additional information

Issued to honor the institution of the Catholicos of All Armenians — the supreme head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, seated at Etchmiadzin since the fourth century — this is one of the heaviest gold coins ever produced by a post-Soviet central bank. The face value of one million dram was largely ceremonial; at issue, the gold content alone vastly exceeded it.

A kilogram of .999 gold at 90mm diameter puts this squarely in the territory of presentation and state-gift coinage rather than anything approaching circulation.
