Obverse description Typeset Notgeld note printed on pale beige paper, with a scalloped guilloche border framing the entire face. The denomination 'Eine Milliarde Mark' is rendered in large ornate Gothic (Fraktur) lettering across the upper centre, with an elaborate decorative initial capital 'E' incorporating intricate scrollwork at left. Below, a block of redemption text in German italic script states the conditions of validity, followed by the issue date 'Zittau, den 22. Oktober 1923' and the dual issuing authority lines. The serial number, in red, appears at lower left alongside two manuscript signatures, with an anti-counterfeiting warning legend printed vertically along the right margin.

Comments

Zittau's Bezirksverband — a district-level administrative body, not a bank — was among the hundreds of German municipal and regional authorities that resorted to issuing Notgeld during the hyperinflation peak of autumn 1923. By the time a billion-mark denomination was necessary, the Reichsbank's output could not keep pace with price increases that were doubling, sometimes daily. Local printers like Vereinigte Druckereien P. Gutte filled the gap entirely within the same town that issued the notes — production and authorization collapsed into a single geography out of sheer logistical necessity.

The Rentenmark stabilization of November 1923 rendered these notes worthless within weeks of printing.
