Gibraltar issued a £0 note in 2021 as a legal curiosity — not a typographical error but a deliberate collector piece, technically valid as a banknote but worth precisely nothing at face value. The concept was a self-aware piece of humor from a jurisdiction that has issued its own sterling-equivalent currency since 1927, distinct from Bank of England notes though historically pegged at parity.
Oberthur Fiduciaire printed the note with the same security specifications applied to genuine Gibraltar currency of the period. The signature belongs to Richard Faille, Financial Secretary of Gibraltar.
