The "0 Euro" souvenir note program, run under license from the European Central Bank, requires participating venues to commission designs through approved security printers — Oberthur Fiduciaire being the dominant supplier in the French market. Each venue pays for its own print run, which means low-volume tourist attractions like regional zoos often produce relatively short editions that sell out quickly and don't get restocked.
Vivarium Darmstadt is one of the older combined zoo-vivarium facilities in Germany, established in the late 19th century. The 0 Euro format gives it a collectible with genuine security printing credentials at a fraction of the cost of commissioning traditional numismatic items.
