Westkapelle's lighthouse on the southwestern tip of Walcheren island in Zeeland has stood in various forms since the fifteenth century; the current brick tower, converted from a church tower, is one of the oldest functioning lighthouse structures in the Netherlands. The zero-euro souvenir format was introduced by EuroSouvenir around 2015 and has since become a minor collecting category in its own right — Oberthur Fiduciaire prints them to genuine euro security standards, including the correct paper substrate and UV-reactive features, which is partly what drives collector interest.

Walcheren was almost entirely flooded by Allied bombing in 1944, a deliberate tactical decision to dislodge German fortifications. The lighthouse survived.
