The Gentiane Express is a narrow-gauge tourist railway running through the Massif Central in the Auvergne region, originally built to serve the agricultural communities of the Cézallier plateau. The 0 Euro souvenir program, launched around 2015 through an arrangement with the European Central Bank permitting commemorative notes without face value, has become a significant secondary revenue stream for French regional tourism operators — the Gentiane Express among them.
Oberthur Fiduciaire, one of the few security printers with the authorization to produce these notes, includes a holographic strip to maintain the visual grammar of genuine euro currency without any legal tender status attached.
