The Wieliczka salt mine has been in near-continuous operation since the 13th century, making it one of the longest-running industrial sites in Europe. It was included in the first batch of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1978 — before the Pyramids made the list. The note is one of thousands of souvenir zero-euro pieces issued under the European Central Bank's tolerance framework, which permits their production provided no legal-tender claim is made.
