The zero-euro souvenir note program, administered through Oberthur Fiduciaire under license from the European Central Bank, allows museums and cultural institutions to commission legal-format collector pieces that carry no monetary obligation whatsoever. Museu do Caramulo — an unlikely cultural institution housed in a mountain village in the Serra da Caramulo — used its edition to honor Amália Rodrigues, the fadista whose recordings in the 1950s and 60s brought Portuguese fado to international audiences for the first time.
Amália died in 1999; Portugal declared three days of national mourning, a distinction rarely granted to artists.
