The 0 euro souvenir note series, produced under license from the European Central Bank, launched commercially in France around 2016 and quickly became a vehicle for regional clubs and cultural associations to issue themed pieces through Oberthur Fiduciaire. CNAD — based in Draguignan in the Var — chose Qi Baishi, the Chinese ink painter who died in 1957 and whose work commands extraordinary prices at auction today. An unusual subject for a Provençal numismatic club, and one that places this note firmly in the more eclectic corner of the series.
