Benedict XVI died on 31 December 2022, making this souvenir note — issued during that same year — an inadvertent memorial piece. The 0 Euro souvenir program, licensed through the European Central Bank and distributed primarily through tourist venues and philatelic shops, had no way of anticipating the timing. Notes bearing his likeness were already in circulation before his death at Castel Gandolfo.
Oberthur Fiduciaire produces the entire 0 Euro souvenir series under controlled conditions, with genuine security features to discourage counterfeiting of what is, technically, a collectible with no monetary value whatsoever.
