Pedro Álvares Cabral led the Portuguese fleet that made landfall on the Brazilian coast in April 1500 — whether by design or accident remains genuinely contested among historians. The Euro Souvenir program, administered under license from the European Central Bank, has issued these zero-denomination novelties since 2013 as legally non-circulating collector pieces, printed by Oberthur Fiduciaire to genuine banknote specification on security paper.
Oberthur's involvement matters here: the firm has printed currency for Portugal and its former territories, giving the production an oblique historical resonance that most souvenir issues lack.
