The 0 Euro souvenir program, administered under license from the European Central Bank, began in France around 2015 and quickly expanded to cultural sites across the continent. Legnica Castle — a Piast dynasty seat in Lower Silesia whose history runs from medieval Polish princes through Prussian administration to postwar Soviet military occupation — makes for a more historically layered subject than the cathedrals and châteaux that dominate the series. The note was designed by Małgorzata Pławecka-Jasek and printed by Oberthur Fiduciaire, the same security printer behind numerous genuine European banknotes.

Cotton substrate, embedded watermark, and hologram strip are carried over from the real currency specification — which is precisely the point, and also why the ECB insists on the zero denomination.
