La Vallée des Singes is a primate park in the Vienne department of western France, opened in 1998 and housing one of the larger collections of great apes in Europe. The 0 Euro souvenir program, administered under license from the European Central Bank, began in earnest around 2015 and turned Oberthur's banknote-grade production infrastructure toward a frankly commercial purpose — legal-tender denominated at nothing, printed to full security specification, sold as keepsakes at tourist sites.

Oberthur's involvement matters: these are not novelty prints but notes produced on cotton-blend substrate with genuine intaglio work. The irony of applying central-bank-grade anti-counterfeiting technology to a zero-value note is not lost on serious collectors.
