The souvenir zero-euro note series, of which this is an early example, was launched commercially in 2015 by Richard Faille's company Euro Souvenir as a legal-format collectible printed on genuine security paper. Oberthur Fiduciaire produced the notes to De La Rue-grade specifications — proper cotton substrate, security thread, and UV features — giving them the physical feel of circulating currency despite carrying no monetary value. The Aquarium de La Rochelle, one of France's most-visited aquaria, was among the first wave of institutional partners.

Demand badly outpaced expectations in the first year, with vending machines at participating sites regularly selling out.
