Fiľakovo castle, perched on a basalt hill above the town, has changed hands between Hungarian and Ottoman forces more times than most fortresses in the region — its fall to the Ottomans in 1554 and recapture by Habsburg forces in 1593 mark two of the more dramatic episodes in Slovak medieval military history. The 0 Euro souvenir program gave Oberthur Fiduciaire a steady commercial sideline printing these tourist-market notes to genuine banknote specification, hologram strip included, with no monetary function whatsoever.
