EuroSouvenir notes occupy a peculiar corner of collecting — legal tender in no jurisdiction, yet printed to full security standards by Oberthur Fiduciaire, the same Rennes facility responsible for genuine euro banknotes for several member states. This one commemorates Engenhos do Norte, the historic sugar-producing region of Madeira, where water-powered mills drove the island's dominant industry from at least the 15th century through the 20th. The zero-denomination format was authorized by the European Central Bank in 2015, opening a legitimate commercial market for tourism-oriented collector notes produced on genuine banknote paper with proper intaglio printing.
