The zero-euro souvenir note format was introduced in France around 2015 and spread quickly as a collector's item sold at tourist sites across Europe. Portugal adopted the scheme enthusiastically, and regional circuits, festivals, and heritage sites issued their own variants through licensed printers — typically Oberthur Fiduciaire. These notes are legal tender in the technical sense but were never intended for circulation and carry no real spending utility; the denomination is the honest admission of that fact.
Vila Real's international motor racing circuit, set partly on public roads through the city, has hosted events since 1931 — one of the oldest active racing venues in Europe.
