Eurosouvenirs notes have been issued under ECB license since 2012, allowing participating cultural sites to sell legal-format zero-denomination novelty notes as retail souvenirs — collectible but not legal tender anywhere. Oberthur Fiduciaire, one of France's principal security printers, produces the series, which accounts for the genuine watermark security feature on what is otherwise a commemorative item with no monetary function whatsoever.

Chaumont-sur-Loire's château sits in the Loire Valley UNESCO World Heritage corridor, which likely drove the site's commercial interest in the program.
