The 0 Euro souvenir note program launched commercially in 2015 under UEDF, with Château de Monbazillac among the earliest regional French subjects issued. Oberthur Fiduciaire printed the series to genuine banknote specification — security paper, hologram strip — deliberately so, since the entire commercial proposition rested on the notes being indistinguishable in feel from legal tender while carrying no monetary obligation whatsoever.
Monbazillac, in the Dordogne, is better known for its sweet white wine than for numismatic appearances. The castle dates to 1550.
