The zero-euro souvenir note program, administered by the Union Européenne des Associations de Musées (UÉAM) and printed under license by Oberthur Fiduciaire, was conceived in 2015 as a legal-tender-adjacent collectible — technically denominated, technically worthless, and deliberately so. Chenonceau is one of the program's more commercially reliable subjects; the château draws well over a million visitors annually, and the notes sell briskly at the site's gift counters.

Oberthur produces these on genuine banknote paper with security features, which is the only reason they pass as convincing objects in hand.
