Souvenir euros have been issued under the Eurosouvenirs program since 2012, produced to European Central Bank specifications but with zero face value and no legal tender status — they exist purely as collector items sold at tourist sites. This example commemorates the Bassins de Lumières, an immersive digital art installation housed in a former German submarine base in Bordeaux, which opened in 2020 after significant delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Oberthur Fiduciaire, one of the few security printers licensed to produce these notes, applied the same anti-counterfeiting substrate used on genuine euro issues.
