António Nicolau d'Almeida founded FC Porto in 1893, making the club one of the older football associations in Portugal, though for decades it operated in the shadow of Lisbon's Benfica and Sporting. The EuroSouvenir program, administered by MEAP, has produced these legal-tender-face-value collector notes since 2013 under licence from the European Central Bank — they carry no monetary function but are denominated zero euros precisely to satisfy ECB legal requirements while remaining freely tradeable as collectibles.
Oberthur's involvement gives the physical object more security infrastructure than most low-denomination circulating notes ever received.
