The Abbaye du Thoronet, a 12th-century Cistercian monastery in the Var, is one of three Provençal abbeys known collectively as the "Three Sisters of Provence" — alongside Sénanque and Silvacane. The Centre des Monuments Nationaux issues these zero-denomination pieces as collectible souvenirs tied to specific heritage sites under its management, a program that has expanded aggressively since 2015 to cover dozens of French monuments.

Oberthur Fiduciaire produces them to genuine banknote specification — security thread, correct paper weight — which is precisely what makes the series attractive to collectors and legally unambiguous as non-currency.
