The August 1944 Provence landings — Operation Dragoon — are consistently overshadowed by Overlord in popular memory, despite involving over 150,000 Allied troops and securing the liberation of southern France within weeks. St-Raphaël was among the primary assault beaches on 15 August, designated as part of the Alpha sector. This souvenir zero-euro note, issued for the 80th anniversary, is part of Oberthur Fiduciaire's now well-established collector series produced under the Eurosouvenir program — legal in format, worthless as currency, and increasingly traded as a minor collectible category in their own right.
Oberthur prints these on genuine banknote paper with authentic security features, which is either reassuring or unnecessary depending on your view of the hobby.
