The EuroSouvenir program operates under a license from the European Central Bank permitting private issuers to produce zero-denomination novelty notes in the euro format for the collector and tourist market — legally, they are not currency and carry no redemption value. This particular piece commemorates the 500th anniversary of Magellan and Elcano's circumnavigation, the first voyage to circle the globe, completed in 1522 when the Victoria limped back to Seville with 18 survivors from an original crew of roughly 270.
