During the Spanish Civil War, hundreds of Catalan municipalities and cooperatives issued their own emergency fractional currency after the Republican government's coin shortage became acute in 1936–37. The Sindicat Agrícol Cooperatiu de Santa Creu de Jutglar — a small agricultural cooperative in a village near Vic, in the Osona comarca — was among the more modest issuers, producing notes in thick card rather than printed banknote paper, a practical choice that also improved durability in daily market use.
Santa Creu de Jutglar itself had a population of only a few hundred at the time. The local circulation of these vales would have been extremely limited in geographic scope.
