Riudarenes is a small municipality in the comarca of La Selva, Girona, and like hundreds of Catalan towns during the Civil War it issued its own fractional currency after the withdrawal of Republican coinage created a severe shortage of small change. These local emergency notes — known collectively as moneda local or paper moneda — were authorized under a 1937 Republican decree that formalized what municipalities had already been doing improvised for months.

Imprenta Casa Franquet was a commercial print shop in Girona responsible for a significant number of these Catalan municipal issues, which is why neighboring towns sometimes share typographic quirks across their respective series.
